The New Year is finally here, so what will you do to make your dreams, wishes, and desires come true this year? Though it took many years to understand, I have learned that anything worth doing must have a plan, so I have come up with these five steps to make your dreams a reality this year.lect upon the year

Before you decide on a plan (hint, that is step one), it is crucial to reflect on the year that has just passed. Here is a great worksheet that may help you do that.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the list of notable people we lost in 2021. Some near and dear to my heart; friends and colleagues who touched my life. I’m sure you have a few as well. Then there is the list of artists, sports figures, broadcasters’ politicians, and lesser-known people whose lives impacted the world.

Before I move on to the five steps to make your dreams become a reality, I’d like to mention just a few of those people. Note: This abbreviated list is in no particular order.

Notable Losses in 2021
  • Hank Aaron: Baseball player and Civil Rights Activist
  • Cecily Tyson: Model and Emmy Award-Winning Film and Theater Actress
  • Beverly Cleary: Children’s Book Author
  • Michael Collins: Apollo 11 Astronaut
  • Archbishop Desmond Tutu: Nobel Peace Prize Winner
  • Larry King: Journalist and Talk Show Host
  • Betty White: Actress and Comedian
  • General Colin Powel: Former Chief of Staff
  • Jerry Remy: Baseball Player and Sports Broadcaster
  • John Madden: NFL Legend

At first glance at this list of names, it does not look like there could be a connection between them. The people are of different colors, gender, and different disciplines. Yet, I see a common thread.

Each of these people had a dream, a vision of who and what they wanted to be. Did they know how to succeed from the beginning? Probably not. I’m sure they all had setbacks, were told they weren’t good enough, and no one believed in them. Their dreams were bigger than the negatives.

Although I don’t know the details of their successes, you can research them on the internet; I know they made their dreams come true. And so, can you! That is what I wish for you this New Year.

Now, how about those 5 Steps to make your dream a reality this year?

Step 1: Decide what your dream is

I realize that sounds obvious but have you thought about your dream in detail. Most of us haven’t. We have an idea about what we want, but that’s about it. If money, circumstances, age, education, and all of the other things that get in the way were not an obstacle, what would you do? Who would you be? What would you create? Here is a worksheet to help you along with making these decisions.

Step 2: Prioritize your dream

To succeed and make your dream a reality, it must be a priority starting today! The longer you put it off and focus your attention on other things, the longer it will take to succeed.

Step 3: Make preparations

Look at your calendar and schedule time to work on your vision. Then write down the steps you need to take to realize your dream. Today you may know of one step that you should take. That’s OK. You’ve made your vision a priority in your life, and the steps will become clear over time.

Step 4: Do something every day that brings you closer to your dream

When you take small steps every day, you will make progress. For example, did you know that mountain ranges and their peaks are constantly growing? The Himalayas grow 7 mm per year. That’s less than a centimeter! Slow and steady wins the race or, in this case, makes your dream a reality.

Step 5: Track your progress.

It is a known fact that anything that you track gets better. When you look at where you start compared to where you might be three, six even nine months down the road, you can see your progress. It is a great tool, especially when you hit a rough patch and get discouraged.
