Once upon a time, in the vast expanse of the human body, there was a bustling city (or town or village or house). This city was like no other, with its intricate network of structures and systems that functioned harmoniously. Its industrious citizens, your cells, worked tirelessly, ensuring the city’s smooth operation. But, for all their hard work, they required a critical resource to ward off dehydration— water.

The story of hydration is an essential one and is fundamentally linked to the well-being of your body. Water, the life-sustaining elixir, plays a starring role in this narrative, quenching the thirst of our diligent cellular citizens and ensuring they perform at their best.

Now, imagine the city on a hot summer day. The sun is blazing, the air is simmering, and the city’s inhabitants are parched. Without the replenishment of water, they soon lose their vim and vigor, their productivity plummets and the city’s functioning grinds to a halt.

This is not a scene from a dystopian novel. This is what happens when you don’t drink an adequate amount of water: your body enters a state of dehydration.  And trust me, it’s not a state you want to visit.

The Downside of Dehydration

Research tells us that even mild dehydration can impact our energy levels, cognitive functions, and overall health.  The human body is approximately 60% water, after all. We need it to regulate body temperature, lubricate joints, transport nutrients, and perform a host of other vital functions. When you are dehydrated you’ll even notice that your skin, even if moisturized, is dry, flaky, and itchy.

So, how do you ensure you remain well-hydrated, especially with your busy schedule and countless distractions? Well, the answer is simple: make drinking water a priority.

Smart Water Tips

Carry a water bottle wherever you go. Years ago, my family in England made fun of me for carrying water in my bag. Summers there then did not get as hot as they do now. I also recommend setting reminders to drink water if you tend to forget. You could even make it a game, challenging yourself to finish a certain amount of water by the end of the day. I have a fun water bottle to help me reach my goal. Hydration doesn’t have to be mundane. Bring some fun into it! I like adding sliced oranges.

Each of us needs different amounts of water, depending on various factors like age, sex, weight, activity level, and climate. Listen to your body and drink when you’re thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated, so don’t wait. While the old adage advises eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day, it’s not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.

Staying well-hydrated is not just about quenching your thirst. It’s about keeping our body city bustling with energy, and every cell citizen happy and productive. It’s about achieving a balance that allows you to thrive, not merely survive.

So let’s raise our glasses (of water, of course), and toast to the power of hydration. For it is the life-sustaining elixir that fuels our story each day.
